To visit Es Vedrá we must go to the southwest of the island, in the municipality of San José, until we reach Cala d’Hort, where we will have an incredible view of the islet from the beach itself. It is important to note that, since 2002, Es Vedrá has been a protected area as a biosphere reserve, within the Es Vedrá, Es Vedranell and Els Illots de Ponent Natural Park, therefore, in order to preserve the fauna and flora, it is not permitted to disembark or set foot on the islet. However, sailing just a few metres away from this magical 380-metre-high islet on its deep, dark seabed is a unique experience.
Goats
A curious fact about Es Vedrá is the number of goats that inhabited the islet from 1992 until 2016, when biologists declared that the number of goats was increasing too fast and that they were endangering the native vegetation of Es Vedrá, and finally, the Balearic Government ordered the extinction of all of them.
Magnetism
Why is Es Vedra, without a doubt one of the most special places in Ibiza? So many are its legends that it has been considered one of the most magnetic spots on our planet earth. In fact, it is one of the favourite places for those who practice yoga and meditation. This has its origins in the 1960s, when the hippy movement in Ibiza was at its peak, they discovered its energy and Es Vedra became a spiritual hotspot.
Triangle of Silence
The Triangle of Silence, one of the best known stories of Es Vedra. The name is due to the fact that the islet, together with the Ifach rock in Alicante and the southwest coast of Mallorca, form an area delimited by a Triangle shape. Legend has it that many of the ships that sailed in this area suffered interference and failures in their navigation systems, just as supposedly happens in the Bermuda Triangle.
UFOs
Another curious legend that feeds the islet of Es Vedrá is that of UFO sightings. At this point, we must talk about the famous Manises Case, one of the most famous UFO sightings in Spain that took place on the 11th of November in 1979 and in which Es Vedrá played a very important role. A plane with 109 passengers on board flying from Palma de Mallorca to Tenerife was chased by three unknown red lights in the sky. After asking the control towers in Madrid and Barcelona for information and discovering that they did not know what it was, the pilot decided to make an emergency landing at the airport of Manises (Valencia). The most curious thing about the case is that the phenomenon happened just as the plane was flying over Es Vedrá. It turned out to be the first case of forced landing due to the sighting of a UFO in the history of Spanish aviation.
